With the increasing uncertainty and growing number of individuals infected with the novel Corona Virus in our communities, Connections Child and Family Center has made the difficult decision to temporarily transition to offering only telemental health appointments. Telemental health, or teletherapy, is a subset of telehealth services using online, secure videoconferencing software that allows us to interact with clients from a distance.

Rationale: Local government officials are urging all nonessential businesses to limit in person interactions and increase social distancing. This strategy aims to limit the strain on our healthcare system and protect the vulnerable members of our communities from complications secondary to COVID-19. This has been extremely difficult decision and one that we have taken very seriously. The health and safety of our clients, clinicians, and community is our top priority. We will continue to monitor the status of the pandemic and health precautions and are committed to resuming in person appointments as soon as it is safe and responsible to do so.

For those that are interested in virtual sessions, we find that virtual therapy and parent support is an amazing resource for many different situations, but especially now for those who are practicing social distancing or who are quarantined.

Some people even like virtual sessions more than in person ones. Children and teens, in particular, respond very well to online sessions and may even make faster progress due to the comfort of being in their own homes.

Although it takes some creativity to serve the mental health needs of children online, we have prepared many therapeutic interventions that can be used with typical items found in nearly every home! AND the good news is that most children are more familiar with technology than the adults in their lives.

We are also ready and able to help with the transition to full-time parenting/schooling/working while all at home together. We have years of experience supporting parents in developing schedules, routines, expectations, and reinforcement systems that work.

There is no right or wrong way to feel about COVID-19.  Offer yourself compassion and patience as the entire situation may be triggering and alarming, resulting in heightened stress and emotions.
