The Therapy Process at Connections Child and Family Center

A therapist and client engage in a counseling session at Connections Child and Family Center. The setting is a cozy room with a sofa, pillows, and soft lighting, creating a comfortable environment for discussion.

Intake; a fancy word for “getting to know you.”

The first session will be spent gathering lots of information about you, your child, and/or your family. This will include your history, the concerns that bring you to therapy, and what your goals are. Remember, you are the expert on yourself and your child so we will count on you to teach us all about you.

Our first session will be about 60 minutes long.

We will explore your concerns more.

We might ask you to fill out some rating forms to get more clear on your concerns. For kids, we will meet them and start to build trust. If a diagnosis is needed, that will be discussed.

We will work together to set goals for our work together.

We will meet about once a week to work on your goals.

This might look like talking about your feelings, learning new skills, or trying out new behaviors. We will help you improve your communication and feel more connected to others.

Most people have about 8-12 sessions on average. For smaller issues, fewer sessions might work. Others find that they need longer to meet their goals.

At least once a month, we meet with parents or the family together. Parents are an active parent of change for kids & teens. You need tools to have a supportive environment at home. We teach you how to handle different issues in these sessions.

During the last few sessions, we review your progress and see if your goals are met. We help you plan for what comes next.
