Dyslexia Testing · North Houston

Dyslexia testing and evaluations

Your kid is bright. You know that. But reading is a fight most nights, spelling does not stick no matter how many times you go over the list, and a word they read correctly yesterday takes three tries today.

A full psychoeducational evaluation for reading, spelling and phonological processing. Most testing finished in one day.

Dyslexia affects the part of the brain that processes language and speech sounds. There is no cure for it, and there does not need to be. Most people with dyslexia do well in school and in life once someone names what is happening and puts the right supports around them. What holds kids back is the years before anyone names it.

What parents usually notice first

Most families who call us are not quoting a checklist. They are describing one of these:

  • Reading that is slow, effortful, or avoided
  • Spelling that will not stick
  • Trouble connecting letters to the sounds they make
  • Words pronounced wrong, over and over, on words you know they have seen before

What the evaluation includes

A dyslexia evaluation is a full psychoeducational assessment. We are not just testing reading. We are working out why reading is hard for this particular child, because the answer changes what helps.

  • Comprehensive intelligence testing
  • Comprehensive memory testing
  • Comprehensive achievement testing in all academic areas
  • Phonological processing assessment
  • Orthographic processing assessment
  • Oral reading assessment
  • Reading fluency and comprehension assessment
  • Behavioral, emotional and social assessment as needed
  • Processing areas as needed: processing speed, visual-motor skills, visual-perceptual skills, auditory processing, attention and concentration, oral language, retrieval speed

What happens after

You come back in and we go through the results together. You get a full written report with the findings, a diagnosis if there is one, and specific recommendations.

That report is the document that opens doors. It is what a school district needs in order to put supports in place, and what you hand to anyone else working with your child.

Cost and insurance

Testing is $175 per hour. Most full evaluations land between $1,200 and $3,500 depending on what questions we are answering. We do accept some insurance for testing, and we will verify your benefits and tell you what to expect before we begin.

See our full insurance and fee information.

Where we do testing

Testing happens in person at our Woodlands office on Sawdust Road. That is the only location doing testing right now, and most evaluations are finished there in a single day.

The intake, the interviews and the feedback session can all be done virtually, so the in-person part is the testing itself.

We can only evaluate people who live in Texas.

When to call

Timing matters more than people expect. Call volume climbs at the end of the calendar year and again at the end of the school year, which are exactly the times families realize they need a report. If you know testing is coming, calling ahead of those windows is the difference between having the report when you need it and waiting for it.
