Dysgraphia Testing · North Houston

Dysgraphia testing and evaluations

Writing is a battle. The handwriting is hard to read, or it takes forever, or your child can tell you a whole story out loud and then produces three sentences on paper.

Handwriting, written expression, and the gap between what your child can say and what they can write.

Dysgraphia is a brain-based learning disorder. It involves trouble writing legibly and trouble pulling information out of memory and organizing it into words on a page. Those are two different problems and both of them are real.

Without help, kids with dysgraphia struggle badly in school, and they often get called lazy by people who do not understand what is actually happening. That label does damage of its own.

What parents usually notice first

  • Handwriting that is hard to read, or painfully slow
  • A big gap between what your child can say and what they can write
  • Avoiding writing tasks, or melting down over them
  • Written work that does not reflect what you know your child understands

What the evaluation includes

A dysgraphia evaluation is a full psychoeducational assessment, because the reason writing is hard varies from child to child.

  • Comprehensive intelligence testing
  • Comprehensive memory testing
  • Comprehensive achievement testing in all academic areas
  • Visual-motor and fine motor assessment
  • Assessment of processing speed and retrieval speed
  • Oral and written language assessment
  • Behavioral, emotional and social assessment as needed

What happens after

You come back in and we go through the results together. You get a full written report, and we explain what it means in plain language.

That report is what you use to advocate for the supports your child needs at school. We take pride in a testing environment that is warm and friendly, because a kid who is already discouraged about writing does not need one more room where they feel tested and found wanting.

Cost and insurance

Testing is $175 per hour. Most full evaluations land between $1,200 and $3,500 depending on what questions we are answering. We do accept some insurance for testing, and we will verify your benefits and tell you what to expect before we begin.

See our full insurance and fee information.

Where we do testing

Testing happens in person at our Woodlands office on Sawdust Road. That is the only location doing testing right now, and most evaluations are finished there in a single day.

The intake, the interviews and the feedback session can all be done virtually, so the in-person part is the testing itself.

We can only evaluate people who live in Texas.

When to call

Timing matters more than people expect. Call volume climbs at the end of the calendar year and again at the end of the school year, which are exactly the times families realize they need a report. If you know testing is coming, calling ahead of those windows is the difference between having the report when you need it and waiting for it.
