Autism evaluations for adults, including the ones who were missed for years
Have you always wondered why you just can’t seem to “get it together”?
Three to four appointments, formal testing, and a full written report.
“That’s just like me!”
If you are an adult and you have read something about autism and thought, “That’s just like me,” you are not alone. Plenty of autistic adults go most of their lives without knowing.
Finding out as an adult
Maybe you have struggled for years with social situations, felt different from everyone around you, and never knew why. Maybe you were told it was anxiety, or depression, or a learning difference, and the explanation never quite fit.
Autism gets missed in adults all the time, especially in women, and especially in people who figured out early how to watch everyone else and copy it. You can be good at your job, well liked, and still be working ten times harder than the people around you just to get through an ordinary Tuesday. That effort is not a character flaw. It is usually what it looks like when a brain has been compensating for a very long time.
You may also be reading this about someone you love. That is a fine reason to be here too.
Also known as: Asperger’s syndrome, Asperger’s disorder, high functioning autism, and PDD-NOS. These are older labels for what is now diagnosed as autism spectrum disorder. Current clinical language describes support needs by level rather than by “high” or “low” functioning.
If you want a professional to give you an answer one way or the other, we are here to help.
What an adult autism evaluation looks like here
We approach late-identified autism knowing that adults have often built sophisticated coping and masking strategies, and that those strategies can obscure the picture. We evaluate accordingly. If you have spent thirty years learning how to look fine, a quick screening will tell you that you look fine. That is not what we do.
Most adults finish in three to four appointments:
- Intake. We talk about what brought you here and what you are hoping to find out.
- Diagnostic interview. Your childhood, your school years, your work and relationships, and what daily life is like for you now. This is usually the longest part.
- Formal testing. Standardized instruments designed for adults.
- Feedback. We sit down and go through what we found, what it means, and what to do with it.
What the evaluation includes
- A detailed clinical interview
- Standardized assessment instruments designed for adults
- A review of your developmental and clinical history
- A comprehensive written report
- A feedback session to go through the results with you
